MediBang Paint is a free Lightweight digital painting and comic creation software. Even though it’s free it comes loaded with features.
Procreate brushes are a powerful and versatile tool for digital artists using iPad, but can they be used in Medibang Paint?
If not, Is there a way to convert the brushset to a png so you can recreate the brush or use it in Medibang?
The answer is yes! I will explain step-by-step how to import Procreate brushes in Medibang.
Can You Use Procreate Brushes in Medibang Paint?
Procreate uses its own proprietary file type .BRUSH that you can’t directly use in Medibang Paint because it’s not compatible.
This means that you cannot directly use Procreate brushes in Medibang Paint by simply importing them into the program.
However, there’s an easy work around: simply convert your .brush files to a png file.
How to Create a Medibang Brush From a Procreate Brush?
Any Black and White PNG file can be used to make a custom brush in Medibang, since you can add brush textures by importing them by clicking the New Brush button and then clicking “From File”.
Actually a lot of work to bring Procreate Brushes into Medibang: extract tips and patterns (most of them have a hi-res), and tweak presets close to original.
Method 1: change the file extension to zip
Simply take your XYZ.brushset and manually change the file extension to “.zip”. .
Then you’ll be able to extracte the PNG images contained within it, open it and you’ll have access to a “shape.png” representing the brush itself.
Then import into Medibang and turn it into a brush in Medibang.
Method 2: Manual Brush Tip Import Method
You’d need to make .PNG stamp files of the brush tips, then, make a texture file by changing the brush settings in Procreate to Texturize, and make a .PNG file of it too.
Then, open both the brush tip and texture file in Medibang, tweak presets to remake the brush as close as original.
Even with the same images, the brush engines for both apps are completely different, so even if you copied settings as closely as possible, the brushes would probably behave very differently.
Method 3: Look for free brushes that meets your standards
You could search online like from deviantart, MediBang Library, or google to find a similar brush which meets your standards.
Luckily, There are cloud brushes available for medibang, you just have to have an artstreet account.
I would recommend this method if either methods 1 or 2 do not work while making attempts to recreate the referenced brush.
Search terms (such as “pixel,” “noise,” “pencil/ graphite,” “inking,” “chalk,” or “chisel/marker” brushes) may be beneficial for your case.
Method 4: make custom brushes in MediBang
Yes, You can make a brush in medibang by yourself that replicate a brush from Procreate. But this is the most difficult and requires a deep foundation in painting and knowledge accumulation.
In this case, the reference would be helpful when recreating results based on the brush strokes. Try comparing your referenced brush with the default brushes offered in the medibang.
You can simply use black silhouettes of anything, save it with a transparent background, then use Add Brush (Bitmap) -> From Canvas, where You can draw your own texture (It is easiest to use an 8 Bit Layer to do this).
When you make your own brushes, you will need to do some playing around with all the settings until you get something you are happy with. (For instance, the opacity, rotation, brush spacing, wherther is Pen or Watercolor Etc).
Conclusion
.brush is a Procreate exclusive brush file type, and can only be read by Procreate.
You can’t use the procreate brushes directly in Medibang as the brush files aren’t compatible.
In addition, You can’t convert the procreate brushes to png file in third-party app like ABRview or AbrMate. You may need to convert, modify and adjust manually to use them in medibang.
To convert procreate brushes to use in medibang paint, you can follow the methods and steps above. Eventually you will get what you want.
Hope this helps!
