As a passionate digital artist, I was on the hunt for a drawing tablet that could enhance my creative experience.
I stumbled upon the Simbans PicassoTab X14, and its impressive features truly stood out.
With a generous 14.1-inch display, this device caught my eye as the largest portable drawing tablet currently available.
I can comfortably say it is best suited for budding artists who crave flexibility and high-quality drawing capabilities.
What’s in the box?
On purchase, you will get a free protective cover to protect the tablet. The leather cover spans from the front screen to the back of the body, connecting with a magnetic edge to close.
The leather cover’s ergonomic design makes it possible to double up as both a simple stand and pen holder. You will also get a Stylus Pen, drawing Glove, Adapter Charger, and a pre-installed screen protector.
Portability and Design
The PicassoTab X14 tablet doesn’t need to be connected to a computer to work, While a bit big, it remains manageable for carrying around, making it ideal for artists who work on the go.
The Simbans PicassoTab X14 has a modern and sleek look with slim bezels around the front screen, making it both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Impressive Screen
The impressive 14.1-inch IPS screen with 1080p Full HD resolution and decent color accuracy is a game-changer. The expansive canvas allows for detailed work and eliminates the cramped feeling of smaller tablets.
This large working area is essential for any digital art creation, allowing for comfortable and fluid strokes and compositions.
The fully laminated screen significantly minimizes parallax, creating a seamless drawing experience. In addition, It has a pre-installed anti-glare screen protector.
I really like this screen protector. It gives my X14 screen a nice matte finish and makes it feel like I’m writing or drawing on actual paper. It also cuts down on glare, which is a huge plus when I’m working for long hours.
Processor
This is possibly one of the weakest aspects of this tablet. It has a Mediocre octa-core MediaTek MT8183 processor. It’s way more efficient than I expected for a tablet within this price range.
I have seen some slower processing when I try to do too much at the same time, but it’s nothing that compromises the overall experience.
RAM
At 6GB RAM, the memory is even better than I thought. Although you don’t have the option of increasing memory size later on, I believe that these 6GB are more than enough to perform most of the tasks you would expect from a tablet.
Storage
Storage-wise, it has 128GB of space. so you can install quite a lot of apps on it.
X14 also comes with the possibility of adding a micro-SD Card up to 1TB, which is highly recommended. These micro-SD cards are incredibly cheap and can be found anywhere.
Connectivity
It has Wi-fi , Bluetooth and can also be connected to other devices through a USB-C port.
In terms of connectivity the PicassoTab X14 offers nearly everything you could expect from any recent electronic device used for art creation.
Cameras and Speakers
You will have a 8 MP Webcam on the front for Conferencing and selfies. This is nowhere close to premium tablets but is still decent. The rear camera is slightly better at 13 MP resolution.
There are four-way speakers but the volume is not loud and audio quality sound hollow.
Operating System
PicassoTab X14 runs on Google Android 13. Since this is an Android-base tablet, you get to use all those apps available on the Play Store, including popular drawing apps such as SketchBook, Clip Studio Paint, Medibang Paint, ibis PaitX, Krita, among others.
It comes pre-installed with powerful android drawing apps like Concepts and Infinite Painter, enhancing creative possibilities.
For animators, you will have a free Flipaclip for 2D animation. If it is your first time on a graphic tablet, you have the Artixo application with video tutorials on how to start drawing.
Stylus Pen and Drawing Experience
Among the free bonus items, the Simbans Picasso X14 has a a free Picasso Pen 4, so you will not have to spend extra to buy a stylus pen separately.
You don’t need to set it up, just pick it up and start drawing. It has a nice weight, very comfortable to hold, and responds very well to the screen.
The Picasso Pen 4 has up to 4096 pressure levels and tilt sesitivity that will let you draw many different strokes with ease.
Line transition from thin to thick is smooth. With low Initial activation force,Thin lines can be drawn easily by applying minimal pressure.
But I should mention that this pen is much inferior to what you will find in nearly all other professional drawing tablets that were created specifically for artists.
Anything from XPPen, Huion or Wacom will be substantially better than what Simbans is offering.
Palm rejection doesnt do randoom drawing pieces by accident, but it still bumps other functions, changes things, etc etc.
Sometimes strokes is little slower if you draw too fast. When the pen is tilted at angle, the cursor will stray slightly away from the pen tip, and this will affect accuracy.
That said, you will still be able to creating amazing artwork with this pen. It will take some practice and some patience, but it’s perfectly doable.
Finally, Unlike other brands with battery-free stylus, The Picasso Pen 4 does need a AAA battery to work, luckily, the tablet already comes with 2 (one already installed).
Battery Life
With a large battery capacity of 10,000mAh, the battery life holds very well at 8 to 10 hours although it depends on usage.
Affordable Price
The price is $299 and it comes with one year of warranty.
You simply will not be able to find another standalone drawing tablet with such a big screen for this price. That’s it, this is the only one.
You either purchase a Simbans or you buy a basic tablet from another brand like Apple or Samsung.
Be smart about it, get this tablet while it’s still cheaper than it should. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Simbans decided to start charging more.
What’s the difference between the PicassoTab X11 and Picasso Tab X14?
The screen is smaller at 11 inches on the Simbans PicassoTab X11 compared to 14.1 inches on the Picasso Tab X14.
So, the Picasso Tab X11 is more portable, and has a Higher pixel density than X14 with same 1080p resolution.
In addition, Both tablets have the same processor, Ram, Storage and even stylus.
Conclusion
PicassoTab X14 is a great entry-level standalone drawing tablet for many use and possibility to not connect it to computer like other graphic tablet.
Its main setbacks include low tech specs, low resolution, and Mediocre stylus pen limiting its use as a professional drawing tablet.
However, for such a bargain on the extra accessories, large screen, and low price, this is a very good deal for beginner artists.
If you would like an insanely cheap device for drawing even though it has some substantial flaws, the PicassoTab X14 is worth a shot.
If you need a pro-level standalone drawing tablet, you will need to invest a little more in a premium tablet like Apple ipad Pro or samsung galaxy Tab S10 Ultra.
